Thrift Thursday: $12 Bookcase Makeover
Welcome to another week of Thrifty Thursday where I makeover my Craigslist, thrift store and garage sale finds. I search the ends of the earth (or just Sacramento) to find something that I can see some potential in and attempt to make it AMAZING.
If you happened to miss my latest Thrifty Thursday posts, here they are….
My boys have a billion books and a very small bookshelf. I’ve been looking for one that is just the right size to fit in a certain spot in their room. DING DING DING. Found one! Actually, my mom found this one. She sent me a picture of one at Goodwill for $12. When I got it home, I was pleasantly surprised at it’s quality. It was sturdy and didn’t need any fixing. The color didn’t actually bother me but the paint job itself was pretty bad.
I wanted to paint it a dark boyish color to complement the rest of the boy’s Star Wars theme room. I mixed Annie Sloan Graphite with a little bit of Pure White. You would think, mixing those two colors together, it would be a dark gray color but it came out to a dark blue. Here’s a hint for painting furniture. If you’re like me and don’t like tons of crazy colors, have your favorite paint colors on hand and mix them up and make custom colors each time you paint something. You’ll never have two pieces that are the same color, yet they will all be cohesive and make your home beautiful. Soon I’ll post about all of my go to colors and how I like to mix them to create beautiful, cool neutrals.
Back to the bookcase….here it is after 2 coats. About 99% of the time I paint with 3 coats, it’s not always necessary but this girl likes a solid coverage.
I would have staged the bookshelf in the boys’ room where it’s actually going to be but the lighting is rough and the walls are tan…I’m not a fan of how their room photographs. I wish we would have painted their bedroom when we moved in but we didn’t and I’m way to tired to do it now.
Here’s the “new” bookshelf. It cost me a whopping $12 and some paint. This is how I decorate my house, people. With quality, inexpensive furniture and some paint.
My oldest isn’t usually a big fan of helping me stage furniture but he was so excited that I wanted this one to have a Star Wars theme.
This simple bookcase is going to help keep their room clean. Is it amazing?? Does it have a ton of character??? Not so much. It’s functional and does the trick. And let me tell you, it’s a whole lot more masculine than the bookcase that was in their room before.
